The Head of the House of Representatives (DPRD) of North Sumatra province, Mr Abdul Aziz Angkat during a violent demonstration staged by hundreds of supporters seeking for the creation of Tapanuli province, at the DPRD building located along Jalan Imam Bonjol in Medan on 03 Feb 09 (Tuesday).
Alert Level-I is the highest level of police alert status that requires 80% of the total personnel strength of a police unit to be on stand by alert in the police station ready for deployment in any eventuality.
Police sources confirmed that between 1000 hrs-1130 hrs, yesterday; the DPRD North Sumatra, chaired by Mr Abdul Aziz Angkat was in session when the demonstrators, mostly students from the University of Tapanuli and residents of 5 districts of North Sumatra (Dairi, Tapanuli Utara, Samosir, Kodya Sibolga and Humbang Hasundutan) that earlier gathered in front of the DPRD building; suddenly ran a muck and forced their way into the building and attacked the DPRD members forcing them to flee to different directions. Mr Abdul Aziz Angkat and some of his colleagues hid in one of the adjacent rooms but the angry demonstrators caught up with them and commotion ensued. Moments later, he collapsed and died. He was rushed to the Gleni International Hospital but was declared dead by attending doctors.
Initial police investigation disclosed that the attack was triggered by a rumor saying that the DPRD would not endorse the creation of the new province. Unfortunately, the 3 police platoons earlier deployed were outnumbered and unable to control the demonstrators. So far, the situation has returned to normal but remains tensed. Police have arrested 6 suspects as of this date and investigation is still going on.
